What to Know About the Social Security Timeline

The timeline for Social Security benefits can vary depending on factors such as when you start receiving benefits and your age. Here is a general timeline for Social Security:

  • Age Eligibility. You become eligible for Social Security benefits at age 62, but you can delay receiving benefits until later. Your full retirement age (FRA) is the age at which you are entitled to full Social Security benefits, depending on the year you were born. For individuals born in 1960 or later, the FRA is 67.
  • Early Retirement (Age 62). You can start receiving reduced Social Security benefits as early as age 62. However, if you choose to start benefits before your full retirement age, your monthly benefit amount will be permanently reduced based on the number of months you receive benefits before reaching full retirement age.
  • Full Retirement Age (FRA). As mentioned, your full retirement age is determined by your birth year. If you wait until your full retirement age to receive benefits, you will receive your total, unreduced benefit amount.
  • Delayed Retirement (After FRA). For each year you delay, up to age 70, your benefit amount increases by a certain percentage (known as delayed retirement credits). After age 70, there is no additional increase in benefits for delaying.
  • Medicare Eligibility. This eligibility begins at age 65, regardless of when you choose to start receiving Social Security benefits. You can enroll in Medicare during the initial enrollment period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after your birthday month.
  • Applying for Benefits. You can apply for Social Security benefits up to four months before you want them to start. We recommend applying at least three months ahead of time to avoid processing issues or delays.
